medals ceremony(颁奖仪式)为何用复数作定语

有如此一个句子：
The winners will get their awards at the medals ceremony on September 15.
句中的the medals ceremony 应该是指“颁奖仪式”，请问这里为何要用复数名词 medals 作定语呢？难道不应该是用单数 medal 吗？譬如说成 medal ceremony。

▲用英语表示“颁奖仪式”，说 the medal ceremony 和 the medals ceremony 都可以。譬如下面一句摘自“柯林斯”英语词典，也用的是复数：

Not since the 1968 Olympic Games has a medals ceremony caused such a storm of booing. 自1968 年奥运会以来，没哪次颁奖仪式引起过这样哗然的一片嘘声。

▲另外，表示“颁奖仪式”还可用 award 代替 medal，也可用单数或复数（注意 award可指“奖品；奖状；奖金”；而medal则指“奖章；奖牌”）。譬如《牛津英语搭配词典》在 ceremony 词条就有 award ceremony 和 awards ceremony 两种搭配。
