这里粗体的“it”指代的时候是“状况”“情况”等？还是作形式主语或者指代spot，而后面的to discover不定式为主动表被动？

这句可以理解为 it was only to discover... it 指visit这件事，only to discover 暗含没想到的意思。严格讲，这里用I discovered that... 较为多见。
